  18. <p>     Hope--and conspiracy theories--can nurture the most
  19. enduring myths. Although after a decade of intense investigation
  20. the United States still has no firm evidence that American
  21. servicemen survive in Vietnam, a new report released last week
  22. has rekindled the emotional issue once again. Prepared at the
  23. behest of North Carolina's Republican Senator Jesse Helms, a new
  24. special minority study from the Senate Foreign Relations
  25. Committee asserts that a 1974 government analysis concluded that
  26. "several hundred living POW/MIAs were still held captive in
  27. Southeast Asia." The Pentagon categorically denied the
  28. existence of the analysis. "While we have yet to find conclusive
  29. evidence of the existence of live prisoners," said a Pentagon
  30. statement, "we cannot rule out the possibility...and we are
  31. pledged to take appropriate action should evidence be obtained."
  32. So far, however, there is no such proof.
